Fighting for our Food: Building a Just and Equitable Food System

The purpose of this panel is to share stories of Urban Food Justice movements around the country and explore opportunities for synergies between systems. Across the food supply chain from production to access, communities of color and low-wealth communities are disproportionately, negatively impacted. Community based organizations, Student Groups, Policy Organizations, and Urban Food Security Networks are working to address rights for farm workers and food service employees, and to increase access to sustainable, local sources of healthy food. The focus of this panel will be to highlight grassroots approaches to food justice and to identify opportunities for collective action.

Esteban Kelly

New Economy Coalition
Anti-Oppression Resource and Training Alliance (AORTA)

Esteban Kelly is the lead organizer for the New Economy Coalition. He has been an important leader and creative force in food justice and co-op movements, where he has served on many boards including the Democracy at Work Institute, the US Solidarity Economy Network, and Mariposa Food Co-op where he also worked for over eight years on the co-management team. From 2009-2011, Mr. Kelly was the Vice President of the U.S.

Grassroots International

Jovanna Garcia Soto is the Program Coordinator for Latin America at Grassroots International. Grassroots International works in partnership with social movements to create a just and sustainable world by advancing the human rights to land, water, and food through global grantmaking, building solidarity across organizations and movements, and advocacy in the US.

Tamika Francis

TheMOVE

Tamika Francis is Executive Director of TheMOVE. She grew up in Jamaica and moved to Boston in 2005, where she immediately found herself at home in Dorchester. She has volunteered and worked with several youth and community development nonprofits in Boston. In her youth, Tamika spent holidays in the countryside with her grandparents, which led to a strong passion for the outdoors and a reverence for traditional and indigenous practices.

Anthony Giancatarino

Center For Social Inclusion

Anthony Giancatarino directs the Food Equity and Energy Democracy programs at the Center For Social Inclusion.  Anthony’s work focuses on collaborating with grassroots leaders and national policy advocates to build policy strategies that create racial equity within both the food and climate movements.
