“Whenever we try to envision a world without war, without violence, without prisons, without capitalism, we are engaging in an exercise of speculative fiction.” – Octavia’s Brood (Co-Edited by adrienne maree brown and Walidah Imarisha) What kinds of culture have we constructed to support the current extractive economy? What is the role of culture in resisting that economy? Does political economy lead culture, or the other way around? This workshop explores the ways in which creative and cultural capital matter in the transition to a new economy, and presents strategies and frameworks for using arts and culture to leverage “speculative fiction” into a just, sustainable world you can see and feel.
