A new generation of progressives are taking leadership roles in city economic development. This creates a promising opening to advance initiatives in community wealth building – such as using city policies and anchor institution strategies to support locally and broadly owned enterprises such as cooperatives, community land trusts, employee-owned firms, and municipally owned companies. On this panel we will hear from leaders in this movement and discuss approaches that are working, and what a city-based agenda for the future might look like as the momentum for locally owned, inclusive economic development begins going to scale.

Steve Dubb is Research Director of The Democracy Collaborative and has worked for the Collaborative since 2004.

Penn Loh

Tufts University's Department of Urban and Environmental Policy and Planning

Penn Loh is Lecturer and Director of the Masters of Public Policy Program and Community Practice at Tufts University's Department of Urban and Environmental Policy and Planning. From 1996 to 2009, he served in various roles, including Executive Director since 1999, at Alternatives for Community & Environment (ACE), a Roxbury-based environmental justice group. He holds an M.S.

Eva Gladstein

Eva Gladstein serves as Executive Director of the Mayor’s Office of Community Empowerment and Opportunity for the City of Philadelphia. The focus of agency, recently formed by Mayor Michael Nutter, is to align the City’s efforts to lift individuals and communities out of poverty and increase opportunities for low income individuals and families.

Tracey Nichols

Economic Development for the City of Cleveland

Tracey Nichols is the Director of Economic Development for the City of Cleveland, Ohio.  She joined the City of Cleveland in February, 2008 after serving for four years as Cuyahoga County’s Assistant Director for Economic Development. Working with her team at the county, she created several new programs including the M.A.D.E.
